Join the eclectic group of homebrewers to discuss brewing techniques, recipes, share opinions, wisecracks and of course your homebrewed creations. If sharing beers try to bring at least 2x12oz or 1x22oz homebrew to share with the club.

A special thanks to Chris, Ryan, and Andrew for representing the club in The Boil Rumble, a homebrew club competition put on by Melvin Brewing. These guys brewed up a Double IPA. We wish these brewers the best of luck with this event.

A Club Competition is in the works, this time around we will be featuring Belgian Beers. This can make for a different style of meeting; where we can be a bit more judgemental as well as find a new champion in our club. This also can help some of us break the mold and step outside our comfort zone to do something new. In years past we have done competitions in the Scottish Heavy Categories and British Milds. This years club competition will feature beers from the Belgian Dubbel, Tripel, Quadrupel and Dark Strong Categories (sorry no IPA’s or Pales, please). Brush up on your style guidelines and start looking for some recipes to inspire your brew session. The competition will take place at the July meeting in hopes that this gives adequate time for as many members to participate.

The club now has a directory. If you need/want to add your name, number and email to the directory please respond to this email. We will also have a sign-up sheet at the next meeting. The hope is that this might make it easier for club members to get together for brew sessions as well as other beer related “extracurricular” activities. If you are not part of the club facebook page you might consider heading over there and asking for an addition to the page as many members use this as a tool to communicate as well.

Club tasting glasses have been ordered. If there are newer members that didn’t get in on the first round or if you already have a glass but might like another few please respond to this email or bring cash at the next meeting (in hopes we have them then). Tasting glasses will be sold for $4 a glass. If it is easier you can PayPal the money to Evan’s email account, if you do this please make sure your name is in the notes so that we can confirm payment. A big thanks to Jim S. for getting this put together.

If there is interest from the club in getting a tour of Tivoli Brewing we have a connection through Chris L. The club can discuss interest at the next meeting as well as some potential dates.

SomePlace Else has been asking the club for suggestions regarding a special release beer. Thanks to Ryan P. for submitting a few stout recipes ideas for the project (Stout Recipe #1 / Strout Recipe #2). We can discuss this over with Ryan and Tori in the next meeting and nail down a brew date pending recipe approval.

The club would like to thank the members that support our club home at SomePlace Else Brewery. Our continued support of their beer, brewery, and business keep our club in good standing with the brewery and helps keep a nice large table reserved for our club every month.

Beers:

Mick – English Ale with American Hops – Partial Mash, Used Munich, C60°, Flaked Barley and hopped with Cascade and Chinook and brewed on 1028. Came out at 4.1% ABV, a low hop profile and a clean dry finish.
Colter – Helles Lager – This young lager was brewed in January with pilsner, munich, vienna and melanoidin malts, and hallertau hops. At 5.9% abv this beer featured a clean and light malty aroma.
Colter – Vienna Lager – Another young lager that was brewed in January. At 4.7% abv this copper colored beer featured a malty profile with detectable diacetyl as some noted.
Jim S. – Traditional Bock – 6.8% abv – Brewed with dark munich malt and mittelfruh and hersbrucker hops. With 2 years age on this beer and double decoction it has a rich malty profile with smooth and bubbly carbonation. Notes of caramel and toffee candy are highlighted. Noted by the group as “Fucking Delicious”.
Chris – ESB – “Extra Special Brexit” – 2-row, C60°, C80°, with Challenger, EKG and Fuggles and brewed on London ESB yeast. This beer has great fruity note characteristics as well as a clean and malty profile.
Jim N. – California Common – 2-row, C20° with Northern Brewer and Cascade; brewed on California Lager yeast. Noted by many in the club to be spot on to the style guidelines. Had a great gritty grain characteristic as well as a clean finish.
Jim N. – Pale Ale – 2-row, C30°, Wheat and brewed with Nugget, Citra and Mandarina Bavaria and brewed on 1056 yeast. This beer clocked in at 6.7% with an amazing aroma or fruit with a clean and smooth body.
Bob A. – American IPA – This is the same IPA as last month. Had a nice classic American IPA taste to it; well balanced between the bittering and the malts. This beer got a thumbs up from the club.
Chuck – IPA – Z – Brewed on 1/10 and keged on 2/1. This beer came in at 7.8% abv, 60 IBU’s, Citra hops and 1968 yeast. A nice straw colored IPA with a big hoppy nose and a nice yeasty profile.
Chuck – IPA – X – 12/7 brewed and 12/30 keged. At 7.6% this beer featured Centennial and Cascade Hops and brewed on 1450 yeast. This beer had a long lingering bitterness with an intense deep bittering at the beginning with a low malt profile. This beer was enjoyed as a great American IPA by the club.
Aaron – IPA – Made in the style of a Bells 2 Hearted. This beer was sweet and malty and brewed with 7 oz. of hops. This beer was a great stab at brewing a flagship beer, nice work!
Robin – American IPA – This partial mash was brewed with homegrown Chinook hops. With an OG of 1.034 and FG of 1.024 it was noted that there was room to identify some of the issues this beer had. This low alcohol straw colored beer was dubbed as “Hop water” by some. Hopefully the club will be able to assist this new brewer in some of the challenges we all worked through in the beginning.
Rick – Belgian Tripel – Also known as the “Triple Rick” for his signature wrestling move this is a variation of Jim’s recipe. Coming in at 10.3% and using Imperial yeast B45 this beer was light honey colored and featured magnum and hallertau hops. This beer was noted as tasting trappist and conjured up monk like qualities. With a big bubblegum taste and dry finish.
Evan – Russian Imperial Stout – 14% brewed in 2015 and aged in a fresh Stranahan’s barrel for 2 years. This beer featured big hits of chocolate, whisky, and coconut as some noted as well as a mild roast flavor. It was commented that this tasted like a big slice of chocolate cake.
Ryan – American Barley Wine – At 2 years old and coming in at 10%. This beer was rich in flavor with boozy raisin qualities that were very inviting and complex; a true to style brew.
Ryan – Imperial Stout – At 2.5 years old and coming in at 14.5% this beer featured a smooth malt quality, big roasty highlights with subtleties of chocolate and toffee. A great sipping beer round the fire brew.
Rick – Barrel Stout – Aged on oak spirals soaked in Wild Turkey this beer has highlights of dark chocolate and vanilla bean. A very rich and complex stout.
Cody – Spiced Imperial Stout – Brewed last September with UK Pale, Munich, Red Wheat and Oat malts and spiced with 8 oz. cacao nibs, red chipotle, cinnamon, and vanilla beans. Fermented on oak cubes . This beer was was big and had a subtle pepper taste followed by chocolate and vanilla. The spices in this beer lend to a complex profile unlike anything most of us have ever tasted.
