Hey All,
@chasjs and I were drinking and talking at the last meeting about doing a club contest with the same grain bill. But you can use what every yeast, hops, and water you want. What is everyone’s thought of doing that for the next club contest?Cheers

Might be fun to do, just to see what people come up with, but not sure how you would make it a “competition”.
February 27, 2020 at 6:59 am #1108RyanPKeymasterI’m up for whatever everyone decides, but would maybe throw out “same yeast competition” as an idea. I’m not sure the grain bill thing will come through as clearly, especially with the muddled “not any style” one ya’ll were talking about.
It’d be interesting to see what everyone did with an english strain for example. Expressive enough to be noticeable, but also flexible enough to do many different styles. Belgian saison could be fun as well.

So the awards might have to be more generic like ‘Best of Show’, ‘Best use of overly complex process’, ‘WTF?’, ‘Why?’, ‘I want this every day’, …
I like that a grain bill ‘competition’ might allow more personal interpretation.

February 27, 2020 at 8:18 am #1115colterwKeymasterJim might be right to not call it a contest but more of a experiment. I just think I would be fun to see what everyone made and came up with.
Cheers

Any yeastI just don’t know how partial mash guys would participate; thinking of Jeff and Mick here. I guess would be happy to host anyone if they needed it.
March 3, 2020 at 3:36 pm #1133SpauldParticipantI might be able to help one of the partial mash dudes. Since this grain bill doesn’t really match anything I make, I’d consider this an “experiment” and probably will only want 5G of whatever I make….so I’ve got room in my mash tun for another 5G-batch-worth of mash. Whomever might join me would need to be somewhat “mobile” with their equipment (at least the key elements) since we’d presumably be hopping this differently and therefore wouldn’t really be sharing the same brew kettle. I’m thinking a common mash, followed by “dueling kettles/burners” on brew day, then just chill into a couple of glass carboys. Wham bam thank ya mam, done and done….and on to sipping a cold bier! LOL

?March 5, 2020 at 8:15 am #1136evan.sherlockKeymasterSam you might find their online shopping useful for ordering grain. I know when I show up there I am easily lost with the crazy amount and variety of grain the the grain room. The online tool helps me search up exactly what I need and have calculated for. You can let them know when you want to pick it up and as always continue to shop once you get there. I just find ordering my grain online saves me 15-30 min on each trip up there.

?March 5, 2020 at 10:45 am #1144joverturfParticipantJim, I would go in with you on your mash if you are up for it. If that doesn’t work I have come up with a partial mash conversion of the grain bill that should be pretty close.
March 5, 2020 at 11:10 am #1145SpauldParticipantAbsolutely Jeff, let’s plan a brew day! I will zip you an email with some thoughts and we can use that as a starting point for our plan of attack.
March 5, 2020 at 12:04 pm #1146joverturfParticipantGreat! Thanks for the kind offer Jim.
