Sorry I missed the last meeting. Were any plans made to meet up for the GABF?

    Jim:

As I work on improving my brewing one of my next steps is temperature control on my fermentation. I don’t have a temperature controlled chamber plus I am getting a little too old to be picking up fermentors full of wort and moving them around. My solution is to use cooling coils in my fermentor and run glycol through the coils. The glycol chiller gives me the advantage of being able to drop the the fermentor to almost freezing if I choose to and I can chill up to 4 fermentors simultaneously. Have one fermentor right now and am saving up for another one. This will also allow me to do a lager.

I was able to get a used chiller pretty cheap recently which has accelerated me on this path. I not used it yet, but soon.

I received my tickets over the weekend and have distributed to those who requested me to buy a ticket on their behalf. We should plan our meetup at one of the next meetings. I will take the commuter train to the event (G-Line). Looking forward to it.

Thanks for the article. Have you every looked into an India Pale Lager (IPL).

I just got my glycol chiller and am going to try a lager style. I also want to do an IPL.

Looks really good. Did you have any trouble with the fumes?

You can get 8 tickets for the general session but only 4 for the members only session. Info at the link below. I checked my membership and my presale code was there. They say you have to optin to get the code emailed to you.

Anyone who wants me to make a ticket purchase for them please let me know. I will want a reasonable assurance I will reimbursed (something like I can hold your fermenter hostage). Are we going to the Member session on Saturday afternoon (the one I usually go to)? The Tickest are $70 bucks. The limit for the members session is 4 tickets which means I can buy 2 tickets for other people – I take my brother so he can wonder around looking for the PBR and Grain Belt booths.

That is one sweet setup. I don’t have that space but I am building(planning stage) an eBiaB setup in a small space I have.

Did you think about using epoxy on your bar top? I want to do that on mine.

I am impressed with your energy. You are really cranking out some work. Looking forward to the open house to introduce the brewery.

    Evan and Jim:

Thanks for your comments. Evan, I totally agree on your notes taking comments and I am working to be better about it. I use Beer Smith software and I will say that it is one of the better investments that I have made (I know Brewersfriend is quite good also). It really has helped with the note taking and also the keeping my brew days very consistent.

I am trying to learn more about beer tasting and I am advancing on it but have a way to go.

Jim, I hear you about impatience. Initially in this hobby I just wanted to brew some beer and see the results. Over time I realize that some of my efforts resulted in some beers that I actually liked to drink (some I do not). I have learned to slow down.

Control over the process is what I am striving for – my next investment is a temperature control system for fermentation. I have a room that stays in the 64 to 67 degree range which is working for ales but limits me on some other types.

The latest issue of Zymurgy Magazine had a good article on boiling your wort. It touched on the impact of altitude on hop utilization. attached is a chart they used. At my house I find I usually boil around 201 degrees F which shows a bittering hop factor of about 1.15.

The article had some other good information like long boil times can actually reduce the bittering as the AA will start to break down with longer boil times. Also had some other info about brewing at Altitude.
