Talk to Andrew Voss. He is the hop king. I know he is willing to trade rhizomes for labor.

I have done hops in my front yard for 3 years now. I currently have Cascade, Chinook and Pacific Gem. The Cascade and Chinook do fantastic and produce well, the Pacific Gem grows well but the hops are so tiny that they dont work out that well to harvest and brew with.

I do have some more on order as of this week. I ordered up some Nugget, Magnum, Mt. Hood, and Goldings. Hoping these new ones work out as these varieties are much closer to what I do brew with.

Yep, Voss will know for sure. I have a bunch of Chinook that I’ve had in the ground for about 25 years. They seem to do quite well.

Chinook are great hops I am curious are they like tree trunks after 25 years?

LOL, yes….well, at least the rhizomes are!……btw, in my experience, they need to be planted EARLY in the season. Others may have had more success with late plantings, but every rhizome I’ve planted late always seems to struggle.

You will probably do okay that early. It is sort of like other plants. Year one it makes a home, year two it figures it out and year three total domination.

I elected to keep mine in large pots to keep them contained.

I’m growing Sterling, Crystal and Multihead. This is their 4th year and they all seem to be handling the environment well.

Nice! They will want to climb right away. The quicker you can give them a line to wiggle up, the better. If left to wander about on the ground, they tend to struggle.

They were barely out of the ground last Friday….now they’re going nuts! They love this warm weather.
