Beer Submission May Meeting:
We are trying something new for this month to see how this works for us to help organize tastings and notes. If all goes well this saves me time typing out my drunken written notes as well as trying to wrangle beer order when unexpected beer characteristics show up unannounced. I appreciate everyone giving this a chance to help keep our meetings more organized with better flow from beer to beer. 

From now till Wednesday at 6:00 pm you can submit the beers you are bringing to the meeting (Homebrews only, no commercial beers submitted this way). Click through to the form and find your name, style/category, ABV and any notes you would like to add. You can request for an email response, this will give you a link to go back and edit your submission if needed.

Once submitted, the entries go through to a backend spreadsheet. Here in columns E and F you can add additional notes as well as tasting notes for other beer you may have enjoyed.

If beers are not added before 5:00 pm on Wednesday they will likely be added to the end of the session. If brewers are not on time to the meeting for their tasting slot beers may be added to the end of the meeting. 

If you notice that your name is not on the form I will gladly add it, just reply to this email/post. I will try to get you added before you need to submit beers. 

If adding notes to other brewers beers please make sure you are writing in the correct fields, this may be more difficult on mobile.

Our first club competition in years is now back. Brew up a batch of your finest American/English Pale ale for competition and judging this August. All members will vote on all beers and the winner receives a ton of shit talking rights. Tasting sheets will be provided, bring a pen and a thirst for summer beers!

With the growing size of the club, hosting has become more than making sure you have some beers available for the guys to drink. As not everyone in the club has the availability to host at their house we would like to continue to share in the work required for a meeting to happen. We are looking for a member or two to team up with the host to bring beer snacks and maybe swing by early to set up or stay later and help clean up. We will be looking for this for the next few months to get a feel on how successful this could be. If we are using the discord we can reach out to offer assistance, additionally I can get people in touch with each other to start the conversation.

April Meeting Recap:

I am certain that many would agree when I say that, “Jeff and Sara put on one hell of a homebrew meeting.”. The garage brewery was the perfect setting for a warm April evening of beer drinking.  This was also the second month in a row where we had the opportunity to welcome some new brewers to the club and drink a few samples with them while getting to know them. With the spread of food that the hosts prepared as well as the bonus beers that they supplied for “after the meeting” were all out of this world; on top of an amazing turn out with members this will be a meeting to remember for some time. Thanks again to Jeff and Sara for your hospitality, you not only make a great brew team but also some amazing hosts.

Meeting Recap / Beers:
  • Aaron – Italian Pils – 34/70 – This slut puppy of a light beer boasted all the things Aaron loves in his women and his beers; light in gravity, not exotic, as well as offering great head retention. 
  • Charles – Czech Pils – Munich really shines in this beer at the end. At 5.3% this beer is clean and drinkable. 
  • Jeremy K. – Bohemian Pils – The spice of the Saaz hops really shines in this beer. 
  • Ryan – “Fun Fact” – At this point in the meeting Ryan dropped this nugget of information on us “Hallertau hops are 2x as hoppy as Saaz” 
  • Chuck – Not Quite Ready Helles – This young beer was pressure fermented and is still carbonating up. I would like to try this beer in a few weeks. 
  • Dave – Colorado Kolsch – Very clean 
  • Charles – Maibock – The real question here was what is the difference between a Maibock and a Maybach? One might be hoppy and the other might be rented. 
  • Jim – Export Kupfersschmiddt – Barke Pils and Barke Vienna fermented on 2206 Bravarian Lager Yeast. This beer conjured up such compliments as “I cannot perceive any Banana flavors, is this right?”,  and “I can taste the krausen”. 
  • Ryan – A Franconian Dunkle made with RC. This clean and slightly nutty beer at 5.4% really brought a flavor. 
  • Jim – Oktoberfest  – This beer was really bubbly and delicious. 
  • Charles – Ukrainian Smash Beer – The lemony flavors of this brew made you taste the invasion. The beer was so damn clean we could see Kiev through the beer. 
  • Sam – 1/2 a belgian – Not sure this beer was named this because of a European side show midget or the fact that it was 3.3% abv. Or the reality is that it was just ingredients Sam had sitting around and needed to get rid of. 
  • Jim – Triple – “Not 1/3 of a triple” this beer was in fact full strength. 
  • Evan – Are you kidding, this guy doesn't bring beer to meetings. We are not even sure he owns brew equipment he knows how to use. At this point between the live discord tastings and my own lack of sobriety the notes sort of go to shit. 
  • Nathan – Brown Ale 
  • Chris – English Porter 
  • Aaron – Dry Stout 
  • Jeremy – Dark Hill Porter 
  • Chris – NZ IPA

OTMP – April Meeting 4/20/22 – March Meeting Recap

 
 April Update: 
With everything this club has seen over the years it is my thought that this club has really improved in the last three years. The caliber of beer being produced has expanded and so many members have really upped their brewing game. I would also say that so many of the new members have added a new dimension to our club. With members like Charles nearly completing brewing every BJCP category of beer which is an amazing feat. To other members like Jim constantly refining his process and his setup where completion is likely an unachievable goal but cannot stop because of his eye for detail and process. Or Ryan who is so well connected into the beer community and responsible for so many of our members and the growth of our club.  So many of you bring to the table a specialty, a knowledge base, and an overall dynamic that add up to one hell of a club. I would never be able to list all the amazing things about this club and its members but it is a really amazing thing that we have going for us here.

March Meeting Recap:

I for one did not expect this many people to attend my small little brewery in my basement. To think back to one year ago I also hosted the March meeting that happened to land on St. Pats; I only hosted 3 others in person and a few more joined online. We are really back on track this year with each meeting getting better than the last.


For my meeting recap I will share a story with the rest of you that I shared with Chris after the meeting last month.


Back in 2007 on my second trip to Dublin I was afforded the amazing experience of visiting “Dawsons Lounge” also dubbed as Dublin's Smallest Pub. In my short experience here drowning a few pints of Guinness. This was really just one stop of a long evening of pub crawling with friends. What stuck with me was not just the same “Pub Culture” that is easily afforded at any Irish Pub worth its weight; but this one was special to me. It was a great place to get some beers but it was amplified by the fact that it could only fit about 12 people including the beer keeper. You were forced to make quick friends with the other patrons as well as drink up and keep drinking or leave as it was a revolving door of people. This pub has always stuck with me as great, because of your proximity to others, as well as the overall feeling where you talk to the other patrons because you are nearly sitting on their bar stool as you are so close. Maybe it was the Guinness, or maybe there was something to this place that made it a bit more magic to me.


When I began building my basement brewery this was one of the things that I aspired to have was that feeling of closeness in a drinking experience and the ability to share stories and tales no matter how much bullshit there was to them. This meeting was certainly the most people I have ever had in this small space. In my mind it was the moment that this brewery really came together where the drinks were flowing as fast as the bullshit and it became its own moment in time for us to share. I truly appreciate each and every member that made it out to create this memory for me in my basement brewery.


Discord meeting Feedback

At the next meeting I would be interested to hear feedback on doing the Discord notes while tasting beers. I know not everyone wants to pull out their phone during a meeting. I will add that it made my life a bit easier, not sure how hard it was on Colter. Any/all feedback is welcome.

Meeting Recap / Beers:
Aaron – Bohemian Pils – Crystal Clear and Crisp, with a sweet finish; fermented on 34/70
Charles – Idaho Pils – Idaho Hops – Idaho 7 and Idaho Gem – Pils MAlt and 20% Munich on 34/70
Jim – Helles Lager – A Pale yellow beer that is super bubbly
Chris – Amber Ale – This sweet and yeasty brew was bottle conditioned and brewed on N36 Liberty Bell
Jim – Skandia / Kveik – This bottle conditioned brew features those flavors we love and know from this yeast.
Charles – Dubble – This clear and spicy brew was made with; Pils, Special B, Dark candi syrup,lallemand abbaye yeast and hopped with Styrian Goldings 
Cody and Cole – Honey Trippel – This light and sweet brew came in at .1% abv. Made with Barke Pils malt and Orange Blossom Honey and  fermented on WLP530
Jeff O. – IPA -These bitter and juicy hops are showcased with all those Mosaic, Simcoe, and Tangerina hops.
Mick – IPA –  Warrior, Simcoe, Willamette hops are featured in this solid beer. 
Chuck – IPA – A West Coast IPA that drink like a Pale Ale at 6.5%
Cody – West Coast IPA – Great aroma was had in this beer, dry bitterness and dry finish
Charles – 7 Day Dry Stout – With a nose of coffee and chocolate this beer is very aromatic. 70/20/10 maris/flaked barley/black barley / lallemand verdant/London III. 7 days grain to glass. 
Jeff O. – Chocolate Raspberry Milk Stout. This beer was very intense and inviting with its flavors. I can't remember where Jeff said he got the recipe from. The raspberry flavoring he used was out of this world.
Jeff A. – Spruced Rum , espresso, Vanilla Bean Imperial Stout – This beer came in at 11.8%, but you wouldn't know it. A big hit of Rum flavor was noticeable and willingly accepted.  
It was at this point I went to be a single parent and put my kid to bed; all hell broke loose in the brewery and like 14 bottles were opened at once, no more notes were taken; but this was when it got to be a ton of fun.

 March Update: 
When March rolls around a few things come to the homebrewers mind; shall I brew a Märzen this year and, do I have a St. Patrick's day beer ready to drink on the 17th? With winter still showing its harshness and with the hopefulness of Spring coming, many of us are also looking to start preparing for lawnmower beers, boat beers, fishing beers, camping beers, running beers, smoking meat beers, and all around warm weather brews. I for one am looking forward coming out of the winter hibernation and warming my skin in the sunshine in a t-shirt and shorts even if it is only going to be a 50

°

 day. 


Website / Discord : 
We had some shake up last month with the website. With issues regarding WordPress plugins we were faced with how to maintain what we had used for the last few years as well as how to look forward to what could be. Much thanks to Colter for brainstorming a great idea to move over to Discord. I have to say that the difference in club activity online was immediately apparent. Having switched our conversations over to this platform lends us to much more actively engage with each other as a club. Questions have been fielded within minutes as well as sharing beers we are sipping on and highlights of brew days. The prospects of this new tool at the club's disposal is a very exciting one.

Meeting Recap / Beers:
Facing blowing snow and a slightly longer drive than normal for a homebrewers meeting the crew did turn out in numbers for this meeting. With initial fears of a meeting attended by only a few people all was cured when Ryan started working out a carpool scheme to get a bunch of the Arvada folks down to Lakewood; thus the origin of the drunken convoy. Much thanks to Chris for hosting all of us in his basement bar! We had a fantastic turn out and a hell of a good time. A few new faces joined us as well as many of the other members we had not seen in a few months.

Good stuff. I didn't get everyone's name that didn't bring a beer, I think it was just Cole maybe that didn't bring one besides Gordon and RC and Colter? I think this was all the beers.


Dave – Zombie Dust clone – Sweet maltiness, but not cloying, classic citra hop profile.
Aaron and Ryan – Japanese Pils from the lagering keg – 80% pils malt, 20% flaked rice – Clean, dry, drinkable, lightly grainy.
Charles – Czech Pils – Really nice malty munich malt (~25% of grist) backbone. “saazy” said someone. Nate said it drank like Ska's Mexican Logger.
Aaron and Ryan – French Pils (“les pils”) from the lagering keg – 100% French pils malt, Strasselspalt french hops – Good bitterness, floral and fruity hop flavor, noble-like.
Charles – Arvada Common – Northern Brewer hops – Malty, good balance, good hop bitterness.
Sam – House Amber – We've had this before and liked it. Good color, well balanced.
Jim – English Pale – Floral, hoppy, great bottle conditioned mouthfeel.
Sam – American Pale – Grassy, dank flavor, citra-like, some got peaches and mango and papaya, others got red berries, really fun experimental hop.
Jim – English IPA – Great sweet malt and earthy, floral hops playing well off of each other. Really nailed the balance.
Nate – S'more Lager – Dunkel with spices (marshmallow, graham cracker, cacao nibs). Malty sweet, rich, spices are really subtle, nicely executed.
Dave – Sweet stout – Rich and malty, sweet but not cloying. Dave mentioned this one didn't fully attenuate, but even with lactose, many of us didn't think this was overly sweet at all.
Robin IPA w Zappa hops – Fruity hop flavor, a grassy and citrusy bitterness, zappa hops are interesting and fun.
Craig – Old Chub clone – Less bitterness and hop flavor than most remember the Oskar Blue's version, but that's not necessarily a bad thing people say. Carmelly. “it rubs the lotion on it's skin or it gets the hose again” – Colter.
Craig – Xmas ale – Cherry spice flavor, good drinkable winter ale. Doesn't actually have spices in it, just a general dark amber/brown winter ale type beer.
Aaron – WC IPA – Malty sweet backbone, really nice foam was pointed out by several tasters.
Evan and Ryan mushroom brown – 4 years old, not ideal for a light english brown, Evan's last bottle. Morel and oyster mushrooms added. People taste umami, but it may have been more soy/malt age. The young one had subtle maple syrup-like flavors from the morels and a general light rich note from the oysters.
Aaron – Wet stout – Coffee nose, spicy rye flavor, really nice.
Aaron and Ryan – 10 day stout – ~10% stout, brewed with kveik yeast, then sous vide infused with whiskey barrel chips, cold crashed, fined and bottled, all in 7 days. Year old, this one was nicer and fresh. Theories that the pasteurization/heat sped up aging process and/or first try recipe just wasn't favorable to aging. Not awful, but was better liked a year ago.
Craig – Belgian saison – Peppery, bubblegum, dry, classic saison yeast flavor.
Ryan and Nathan – Imperial belgian saison – Pils, munich and wheat malts, saaz and a touch of goldings hops, very highly carbonated. Last bottle, drinking well at 18 months.
Jim – Tripel – Classic aroma and classic flavor, a crowd pleaser. Chimay yeast picked out by a few members in a fond way.
Cody – “tired old” Golden strong – Like a big pale barleywine, a few years old at this point.
Charles – Brett pale – Horsey, fruity nose, some light lemon and dank hops in the flavor.
Charles – Lambic – Lightly tart, refreshing, clean, quite pleasant.
House beers 
Chris – English Porter – Really chocolate heavy, quite malty and nice.
Chris – Mild (?) – Fruity, lightly malty, easy drinking.

 January Update: 
If you have not seen the email from earlier in the week check it out. Jeff Aikman has setup a tour at Root Shoot Malting followed by a tour of Verboten Brewery. This is setup for Friday 1/21 at 1pm. RSPV Form can be found here, We need OTMP RSVP numbers and names by Friday 1/14.
If anyone knows a homebrewer affected by the Marshall Flie there is help for them through the AHA. 
Possibly some of you have lost your homes or been displaced, and no doubt members of your clubs may have too. Having experienced the 2013 Colorado floods and being a FEMA recipient, I know how devastating it is to lose your home and or be displaced. However, once the shock of this mess of a fire softens, we have an opportunity to help homebrewers feel a little lighter and better by helping restock the equipment of those who lost their brew system to the fires. I created a Google Form that most certainly could be better organized, but you gotta start somewhere.

Beers:

  • Nathan + Ryan – IPL – A step mashed beer  that carries the scent of the pith of a grapefruit in its nose. Magnium, Citra, Amarillo, Simcoe, 20% Rice, 80% Pils Malt. Fermented on 34/70 at 60°. This beer was snappy and crisp and also noted “Surprisingly well done!”
  • Sam – Blonde Ale with Peach and Rhubarb. A very light and clean beer, with the flavors of the rhubarb coming through stronger than the peach; it also carried the slightest taste of bitterness as well as tart. Comments of “This might be Sam's best beer!”, this was a smooth warm weather drinking beer that was flawless. 
  •  Mich – English Pale Ale. Brewed with Cascade, Chinook, and Mystery X and fermend on WY007 and coming in at 4.7%. Mashed with chocolate rye, munich, victory, and carra Vienna malts. 
  • Ryan + Nathan – Dunkel Fest Beir, 5.8%. This beer was very thicc for a 5.8% brew; with its big body hips and with a bitterness that was spot on. Mashed with Munich I + II and 5% Carafa Special III
  • Sam – Brown Ale. Dubbed “Canary Islands Brown”. This beer had a unique flavor from the toasted rice that brought with it a nutty flavor. It has the nose of an interesting exotic tea blend. 
  • Chris – English Porter. This beer brought with it a flavor of roasted nuts. Brewed with Maris Otter, Crisp Brown, Crisp Black and First Gold and brewed on 1099
  • Ryan – Dry Stout. This beer smelled of brown sugar and fruit. This crushable brew was the lightest beer of the night from Ryan. 
  • Aaron – Winter Seasonal – This beer was similar to a really dark amber beer. With hoppy notes to carry it on. Not sure who spotted it but they called it to the room, “This beer has special B in it!” as it was shouted. Hopped with CTZ, Nugget, Cascade, Mittelfrueh, and EKG.  
  • Aaron – Imperial Stout dubbed ” Anakin Skywalker Young Stout Imperial”. This beer was layered in a frothy dark foam and had an interesting peppery flavor to it. It was shouted at Aaron “Stop drinking this beer, age the damn thing!”. 
  • Jim – Eisenbach. We were prefaced with our por with Jim commenting “This could be interesting”, A blonde Eisenbach made from the pale ale batch he froze, this beer had a strong natural sugar flavor and carried its sweetness throughout, a very nice beer. 
  • Robin – IPA with Mariana Hops. This super bubbly brew was spot on with its conditioning, was light in color with a lemony colored haze to it, and really great beer from Robin. 
  • Jim – IPA “Brahmaputra”, As we set sail with Jim in this IPA adventure we encountered Fuggles, Goldings, and Challenger hops as it rang in at 6.8% abv. “A beer hoppy enough to make you want more”
  • Chris – Strawberry Mint Mead. This subtle strawberry on a virtually non-existent mint platform. At 14% you would never know it. Commented on with “This is really fucking good, there is a bit of bitterness, but this is really fucking good”

OTMP – December Meeting 12/15/21 – November Meeting Recap

 
 End of the Year Update: 
With 2021 coming to a close many of us may find time to reflect on what we accomplished in 2021 as well as where we fell short. I, for one can say that this year marked a new low in my volume of brewing, not so much intentional but more so out of necessity of the priority of things in life. If the second year of the pandemic showed me anything it was where my attention had not been for a long time. Mostly with regard to health and mental wellbeing. Over the course of this year I made an effort to correct both of these issues which also meant I needed to drink less and gain focus in areas I had lost focus in 2020. But over the course of this year many achievements and personal goals have been met as well as regaining control over what I do have control over these days. I am in better mental and physical health than I have been in years as well as strengthening the bonds in my family. All of these have been critical to me this year on making smarter choices and returning better outcomes. 

I see this all similar to brewing where if your processes and procedures are not good your end product isn't going to end up right. If you cut corners and look for easy answers you will always fall short. If you put in the hard work and effort (along with a little help from knowledgeable friends) you can truly find the way to success. As each of us navigates what will become in 2022, I challenge you to find the things that are holding you back; in brewing, in life and in your career (or retirement, for those lucky bastards that are enjoying that life). Typically, we are our own worst enemy when it comes to putting roadblocks in our own way, usually so apparent to others but virtually non-existent to ourselves. What small changes and efforts can you make to give you better returns? 

As the New Year comes around it is typical for people to make resolutions. I usually find these most awful and find it as gimmicky as anything Valentines Day, “Worlds Greatest Dad” coffee mugs, or anything for sale on Wish. I want to know how the club reinvents itself again. We have seen the last 21 months drastically change this club. Many of us know what this club looked like 3, 5 and 7 years ago, or more; what have we lost, what can we bring back, what can we do that is new? I for one will say that I love meeting up at club members' houses, I think it is so much better for all of us. As for things that have been lost over the last nearly 2 years;I can say that I miss group brew days, I have fond memories brewing over at Andrews house as well as Dean's house. I can also add that I miss getting into barrel projects, with all the steps and organization behind these to properly execute. The spirit behind getting 10 guys together to make “one recipe” and then leave it locked in a basement for months on end to only then find out what happened. It is also worth mentioning the “grain club” and the fun that was when it was in its glory. 

If you have made it this far into my mind dump, congratulations! I really would like to take a look at this club from a fresh set of eyes and see and plan what we can achieve in 2022. I am not looking for much, just for each of us to look for the small things that we can do to help reinvent this club as well as the things we can do to assist in normalizing this club once again. This club has been a regular social outlet with all of my favorite freaks and geeks, I also know that we are a bit more than just a social club but definitely not a club that sponsors beer TED talks on procedure. I want to know from you, what does 2022 hold from OTMP, and what are you willing to do about it?

Meeting Recap:

Much thanks to Charles for playing host for the second time this year.Not only does Charles have an amazing venue in his basement but he also happens to have a fantastic tap list. Not only that, he is a hell of a host when it comes to providing some pork sandwich meat refreshments for the beer bellies. Thankfully, this time round we didn't get beer on his ceiling like last time, so maybe, just maybe, he will have us back. As loud as these meetings can seem to get, this meeting was really in the sweet spot where we could have group conversations as well as sidebar conversations. Additionally we hosted a new guy RC, a friend of Ryans, hopefully we made him feel welcomed. I would add that we had some damn amazing beer this meeting; I do truly feel that this club has stepped up its game in the last 2 years, or maybe it is just something in the water. 

Beers:

  • Charles – NZ Pils – “Motueka Hops'' – Montueka Hops for dry and flame out hops. German Pils, Rye,  Fermented on 34/70 Dry Yeast. This beer featured a clean dry finish, nice aeromatic nose featuring a cantaloupe nose. Apollo as a bittering hops
  • Charles – Southern Hemisphere – 5.5% Dry hopped with Ella Hops, Had a minty quality to it. Some mentioned a cat mint type flavor. A citrus nose or lemon mint nose quality; a really interesting experiment going on here. 
  • Jim – Best Bitter – This copper colored low alcohol beer. Where comments from Jim were mentioned “Possible at best”, or Needs dry hopping”
  • Jim – East Indie Ale – Fuggle, EKG, and Challenger, this bright Orange beer brewed on Fullers 1968/W002, this beer was reflected on as “Bright finish, clean and complete”
  • Jim – Dunkelweisen – 5.7%, Brewed on 3068 in 10B style, this “Very Clear” beer was a light brown in color featuring a malty backbone with a noticeably pleasant yeast quality and yeast flavor to support the other textures of the beer. 
  • Jim – Munchiner – This beer was in question before it was opened. Aaron promptly pores this beer out in the spittoon. “Comments made were around “Flabbiness in the Roast”, “I have no image”, At least Jim brought some dumpers” -Aaron, and “I am so god damn ashamed” – Jim 
  • Aaron – Dry Irish – 4% – Brewed on S04, Featuring a nice roast nose and light roasty quality with a plestent coffee roast type nose, this beer received comments like “Dry, like my wifes vagina” and “A Dry Breakfast Stout we can all agree upon” or “Reminds me of Ashy Larry and his lack of moisturizer, that sick mother fucker”. 
  • Jim – Winterest – With 11 days in the bottle this beer was quite young. brewed on WLP002. This beer featured a carmally flavor, still a bit young, but on the fine side of drinking and a bit sweet. 
  • Jim – Golden Strong – Super bubbly, an amazing coronation rate that was dialed in. Comments such as “Nice, really effective corking Jim!”, or, “Slightly less dry than a Duval”; the cat was let out of the bag when Jim shared with us that “The secret is in the carbonation, it needs the carbonation, to not be sweet” other comments such as “Very effervescent” ensure the masses wanted more of the hooch. 
  • Aaron / Chuck – Pliny Clone -A taste off between the real deal and the “Schimney the Schmelder” – RC and Ryan were the Official Panel on this face off. Note being: The Pliney has a high carbonation but sulfur quality and Aarons is less carbonated and much more approachable and pleasant. The high sulfur seems to be a trend and I cannot tell why, and the contrast seems to be really highlighted here. A nice head to head comparison, a really touch gauge of comparison, when Aaron seems to check off a few more boxes in quality and profile”
  • Jim – Quad – Dubbed the Don Ducelest or “The Gift From God” this “Spice Heavy” beer proved to be commented as a nice beer for “A beef reduction sauce” 
  • Jim -“Old Winterfest” this beer was actually really good, as much shit as we have given Jim tonight, and I also am also drunk enough into the evening that virtually no notes exist on this beer. 
  • Robin – Pepper IPA – Fresh Chillies were the answer in this beer – only placed on the beer 2 days before the bottle. This beer received reviews like “I want this with a pulled pork sandwich, wait let me go upstairs and get one”. This beer carried its spice in the nose and left most of the connotations we have about pepper beers in the dust. This beer has a lot of flavor on a mellow profile.

 Club Update: 
The last meeting reminded me of how much I rely on this club not only as a place to talk about beer but also as a social network. Collectively we are similar minded people that embark on crazy DIY projects of all types. When we gather as a club we can't stop ourselves from making jokes, sharing stories and also relying on each other for opinions and expertise when it is needed. This club is so much more than a beer club, we are defined in the spirit of our nature being active and involved individuals that see beer as one of the vehicles to showcase our talents, artistic expression as well as a way of making a product that brings us together with friends and family. This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for each and every member of this club that brings their own personality and spirit to this club that makes it an amazing experience. Cheers to you, Mr. Homebrew guy!

Can Seamer Update:
The seamer is now ordered as of this last weekend. We went with the B64 ends on the 202 cans, these can be 16oz or 12oz. Ryan is helping us along in securing future cans and ends for use. We are working on gaining an initial stock of cans and ends and figuring out a program that works for all of us to use and store the seamer.

September Meeting Recap:

Meeting Recap:

What could be better than a cool Fall evening hanging out in Jim's Beer Barn and sipping on some of the finest homebrewed beers in all of Arvada, not much. 

Beers:

  • Aaron + Ryan – German Pils – Brewed with nobility hops on a hop stand and Idaho experimental malt. This beer offered a clean bitterness and low CO2 volume and left the palate with a lemony fresh taste. 
  • Aaron – Bohemian Pils – 5% – Weyermann Pils malt and Hallertau Hops, fermented on 34/70 and step mashed. This beer was very light in color so the sexy mood lighting in the beer barn was changing people's perception of the SRM. 
  • Evan – Pils – A kveik pilsner made with a simple workingman's recipe. This beer offered a bready quality and it seems that some of the off flavors in the last keg were fixed by letting the beer clean itself up at room temperature for a month. Someone ocmmented it was “tangy”, not sure if this was a good or bad comment, oh well, fuck 'em. 
  • Charles – Festbeir – Weyermann Pils malt and munich malts. A very clean and fresh beer. 
  • Chris – Kveik Festbier – Oslo yeast made a feature in this beer. The intense flavor of orange made a highlight in the profile of this beer, someone hit the nail on the head with the comment “It's orange marmalade” 
  • Jim – Steam Beer – This clean drinking beer was so good we could tell that “the steam was baked right in”
  • Nate – SMASH – Crisp Maris Otter and Cashmere hops, this easy drinking beer was well balanced for a SMASH. 
  • Jim – English Pale Ale – With comments like “It's great”, “Bitterness on Point!”, and “Freshy McFresh”, you know this shit was great. 
  • Colter – Amber Ale – Made with STEAM HOPS©®™ and brewed in a BEERMKR
    ©®™ that was designed in BOULDER
    ©®™, this dry and Bitter beer was fermented on S-04. Reminded me of the tag line “Set it and forget it”
    ©®
  • Nate – Dunkelweis – 45% Munich and 45% Wheat malts made up this bready beer. 
  • Chris – ESB – Very dark and Roasty beer tasted a lot like an Old Ale while it rang in at 7%
  • Jeff A. -Dunkle – This dry and malty beer has a wonderful color accented by Jims mood lighting. As overheard ” Light and roasty, I will drink some more to keep me toasty” 
  •  Charles – Belgian Strong on Pinot – A 30% Pinot this clean and light combo was described as “A really fucking strong Rosé”, a really interesting and tasty treat. 
  • Aaron – Fresh Hop Hazy – This big dry hop beer where Aaron told us all of his secrets on how to make beers this delicious. Aaron divulged “The secret is in your bank account” when questioned what he meant by this he responded “For 5 gallons you are going to need to bust out at least a $50 just for the hops, that is how you make them incredible.” Dubbed as Aarons most amazing Hazy, people commented that this beer was “Fucking Incredable!”
  • Robin – Chilli IPA – The strong nose of chillies coming off this beer would have you thinking you were in for a real ass kicking, when diving into the tasting the chilli flavor was really muted and fell into the background. The chillies were added to the secondary fermentation and not roasted. Ass overhead while sampling this beer, “I dont have hemorrhoids but I buy my preparation-H wipes at costco.” 
  • Chris – Imperial Cherry Milk Stout – Comments from this beer included “God dammit Chris! I hate you! You make such fucking good beer!” and another comment of “A deep cherry taste to it, like you are drinking a soda from a 1950's cafe.”
  • Ryan – Stout – 20% ABV – This rich, boozy carmel concoction featured an inviting roasty nose. 
  • Ryan – “Hobo Mead” – Made by a stranger for strangers, it was a strawberry mead. 
  • Nathan – Carmel Apple Cyser – A surprisingly amazing drink! 
  • Jeff – Raspberry Black Currant Cider – as overheard “Jeff, god damn! This is fucking great!”
  • Jeff – Hyprocrass Strawberry French Liquor – dubbed as “Bozzy Hooch” conjured up comments like “This is what MD20/20 would taste like if it was good”.

 Club Update: 
As we say goodbye to the warm weather and outdoor activities that we all enjoyed this summer we can now look forward to the next phase of the year. Celebrating indoors with our friends and loved ones and maybe spending a little more time on our hobbies than we had over the summer. With all of the hobbies within the hobby of homebrewing you might find yourself amidst a remodel project, a DIY project building yourself some homebrewing gadgets or just building out your next Winter warmer recipe. We can all take a moment to step back and see how all of us in the club come from different angles of the ber world but all coalesce on the notion that we are hands on people that enjoy testing, building and impacting the environment around us with the things we make and the things that we do. What a great time to be a homebrewer, with all the resources, knowledge, and tools available to us; I ask you, what is your next beer project?

September Meeting Recap:

Meeting Recap:

Aaron proved that his hosting skills might rival his brewing skills providing us all a cosy atmosphere in his backyard to sip on beers and enjoy a bratwurst. One of the highlights of this meeting was that this may have been the first OTMP meeting ever where a majority of the beers were lagers. A truly fascinating experience where light beers reigned king for one short evening. There was much talk about the process and methods on lagering beers and how fast or slow some of us are turning these beers over. Aaron may have had a chance to try all these wonderful beers if he didnt keep pouring them out in his lawn as we kept filling his glass for him while he hosted. 

Beers:

  • Aaron – Pacific Rim Lager – This beer was brewed for a Moab wedding in October. This amazingly clear beer showcased the pale yellow color featuring Sarachi Ace and Motueka hops, brewed with 30% corn and fermented on W34/70
  • Aaron – Pils – What do you do when you you get a free 50 lb sack of malt from Ryan, you make this SMASH beer of course. Low carbonation and brewed with noble hops this beer was good for costing next to nothing to make. 
  • Jeff – Helles – 5.3% – This brilliantly clear beer was brewed with Carafoam, Pils malt and Melanoidin. Step mashed from 148° – 158°. Very clean summer drinking brew. 
  • Jeff – Kolsch – 5.5% – This pale light brew was made with Tettnang, Spaltz, and Hallertau Hops and fermented on 25/65 Wyeast. Another clean and delicious creation from Jeff. 
  • Evan – Pils, I guess – This fast fermenting beer was brewed on Kveik yeast and turned in just a few weeks. Some subtle flavor issued that need to cleaned up with temperature and time based on the feedback from Ryan and Aaron. 
  • Charles – Grodzkie – This near crystal clear beer was made with Oak smoked wheat malt. The smoky nose on this beer was interesting and inviting, a low smoke profile when compared to other smoked beers. Dubbed the “polish sausage of beers”. 
  • Charles – Martzen – 5.5% – This beer showcased a brilliant copper color and was very much on target with style. 100% Barke Munich malt. Very delicious beer. 
  • Jeff – Alt Beir – 6.5% – A rich and bold copper color featuring Tettnang, Saaz, Perle and #1007 Wyeast. This smooth  beer was received as a “Damn Fine Brew” by many club members. 
  • Cody – Belgian Golden Strong – If you want to read more about this beer look in the last 12 months of brew notes. 
  • Jeff – IPA Midwest – C60 and Styrian Wolf and Citra Hops. 6.2%. This beer carried a smooth profile. 
  • Evan – The Hop Salad – A Dry finished beer that tastes reasonably good. 
  • Charles – Mixed Sour – This super concoction of a cider and a Russian River beatification were the bones of this franenbeir. A bit tart but not that tart and very tasty, words to describe this beer are hard to find. 
  • Ryan – Imperial Saison brewed on Dupont yeast. Brewed with Nathan. This “Winter Saison Dupont” carried a dry finish and was another hit from Ryan's greatest hits. 
  • Gordon + Ryan and many others – Cider. This is balanced and not sweet and not dry with a touch of tartness. Really nice feature of cider.

Chuck hosted the group on his beautiful upper porch.  The Beer Barn Brigade rode over on their bikes, per usual, while the rest of the non-Amish folk drove their cars to the meeting.  Gordon brought his salty nuts to the party, we'll just leave that one alone.

Beers:

  • Kolsch (Ryan) – Light, crisp and refreshing.  Creamy head. 80% German Pilsner malt, 20% Weyerman Wheat.  Spalt hops, 3470 yeast.  Fermented at 59 degrees then raised to 68
    “Brohemian” Pilsner (Aaron) – Single malt, Hallertaur hops, 3470 yeast. Mash peaked at 199 degrees.  Clean, grassy taste.
    Czech Pilsner (Jim) – Clean and crisp. German malt and Heidleberger Malt.  Saaz hops, Czechvar yeast.  Krausened for carbonation (duh!).
    Dunkel (Jim) – Very clean and refreshing.  95% Dark Munich and Carafa Special III malt.  Mittlefruh and Hursbrucker hops.  3470 yeast.  Krausened, you know…cuz Jim.  🙂
    English Bitter (Nate) – 3.9% ABV, Burton Salts.  East Kent Golding hops and S-04 yeast.  Hot mashed with torrified wheat.  Very clean, would love to see this on cask pull.
    English Brown Porter (Nate) – Brown, malt heavy with a little smoked malt.  EKG hops.  A little smoke on nose and backend of the taste.  Well balanced.
    Chocolate Saison (Colter) – We think he made this just to piss Jim off, but he claims is was part of some sort of make a beer to match a bad movie.  5gal batch – 14 lbs of Pilsner malt, 4 oz chocolate malt.  3711 yeast.  “Shitload” of nando hops.  Fresh Saison yeast.  65 degree ferment.  Very clean beer with just a hint of chocolate.  Even Jim liked it, just didn't like the sound of it.
    Marzen (Chris) – Excellent Marzen.  Made with Oslo Kveik yeast, fermented at 65 degreees, only 1.5 weeks old.  6.8%, high for a marzen, but Jim would have believed it to be a Maibock if he wasn't told Marzen.
    Dunkel (Jeff) – Roasty, 4.5% ABV, Pilsner and Munich III malts.  3470 yeast and Tettnang hops.
    American IPA (Chuck) – Dry, crisp – Citra hopped IPA.
    American IPA (Chris L) – Cascade, Simcoe, Centennial hops – 8.9%.  Gordon wants recipe.
    Golden Strong Ale (Cody) – 2 years old – fruity esters of stone fruit.  Pilsner and honey malts.  1388 yeast.
    Quick Stout (Colter) – Sous vide mash.  10% abv – Kveik Oslo yeast.  Oaky taste
    Blonde Eisbock (Jim) – Berry nose, clean and slightly sweet.  11.2% ABV.  Brewed to 7%, freeze distilled.  Plastic fermenter.  Went from 10g down to 5g after distillation.
    Cherry Mead (Sam) – 3 years old.  4gal batch – 12lbs honey (wild from bee keeper).  10oz of cherry concentrate.  Cherry apple taste to it.  12% ABV
    Strawberry Hypocrass (Jeff) – Strawberries, sugar, white zin wine, bourbon, 100 proof vodka, lemon zest, cinnamon stick.  Great dessert drink!  People want it over ice cream.

OTMP – August Meeting 8-18-21 – July Meeting Recap

 
 Club Update: 
The July meeting was a road trip for those of us brave enough to make it. Some of us carpooled, some of us didn't, but all of us thought about the dedication that Sam Lemons puts into every attendance of our meetings up North. Sam represents his space in Littleton with this amazing brewing space, sipping patio, and dog training facility he has at his house. He has truly adapted his space in his house to his brewing process. The evening was calm and pleasant in contrast to the other meetings, we didn't have 45 beers to get though, we had time to listen to each other. This relaxed pace gave us time to talk, drink, and converse in topics of process and ideas relating to homebrewing.

So Gorndon wants a seamer, 7/9 dudes won't pony up? WTF. Totally cool. Who else is throwing in on this? More or none?

I was planning on doing the meeting outside on the back deck.   If it rains we can do it on the lower patio level which is covered.  If we have a monsoon we can do it in the basement.  
Entering will be the same in any case.  Go to the West side of the garage(to the left of the garage as you are facing it )  and go around back – you will have to go down some stairs (be careful the stairs are uneven).  You will then see the stairway back up to the deck.  If someone has trouble navigating stairs just knock on the door and we will gladly escort you through the house to the deck.  I just wasn to minimize the traffic through the house.   People are welcome to park in the driveway if space allows.  People can park on both sides of the street  and in front of neighbors houses (they park in front of mine when they have parties).

Cool calm and beer sippin' at a relaxed pace with good company. 

Beers:

  • Charles – Pilsner – Hüll Melon and Magnum Hops, light body a bit of lemon and dry finish
  • Charles – Blue Corn Lager – 25% corn added to the mash  made in a pre-prohibition style, has a slight pale pink or rose color to the beer, sort of like the color car you saw the Avon woman riding around in back in the day. Super easy drinkin beer. 
  • Chris – Pale Ale – This medium copper colored beer had a fruity nose with a punch of bitter at the end; Columbus and Chinook hops
  • Sam – Pale Ale HBC630 Hops, this pale yellow beer had a raspberry flavor that came from the hops, this clear, clean and crisp beer started all sorts of conversations about how else this hop could be used. 
  • Charles – Sahti – This traditional Finnish beer was a step mashed no boil beer served with no carbonation. Commented as being “MaltTea”. 
  • Evan / Ryan – Mushroom Brown – This 3 year old beer was still malty, sort of meaty profile was starting to show a touch of tang on the end but otherwise was still an interesting beer. 
  • Charles – Roggenbeir – This beer smelled of a weissbier or a dunkel with a touch of flavor difference from the Rye, this beer finished very dry and poured very thick and viscous. 
  • Gordon – Chocolate Orange Stout – This beer was guaranteed to be less than 10 years old, and had some % of alcohol in it, and was certainly sitting under pressure in Gordon's basement for a very long time. It had a great flavor of orange from extract and nicely presented with a chocolaty beer. It was like drinking one of those orange chocolate balls from Christmas. 
  • Jeff – Imperial Sweet Stout – This barrel aged beer carried an inviting nose, with a nice and smooth profile that has stood up to time. 
  • Chris – 12.1% RIS – Aged on oak spirals brewed with M44 Mangrove Jack and is now celebrating its 173rd day on earth
  • Nate – Oud Bruin – Aged on Oak spirals this beer started out with Belgian yeast then was aged on Brett for 18 months. There were small indications of oak left in this beer but the dry and sour flavors were really starting to come out.
  • Nate – 7 year old blend of Brett/Flanders Brown – This pale colored beer was made from 3 different beers that were brewed over 3 years all with the malt bill, 1/3 wheat, 1/3 unmalted wheat, and 1/3 barley; As commented” This is a straight lambic, no nonsense”
